Nappy Rash

What is Nappy Rash?

Nappy rash is a very common skin condition that affects babies and toddlers who wear nappies. It happens when the delicate skin in the nappy area becomes irritated by prolonged contact with moisture, urine, or stool. The rash typically appears as red, sore patches that may feel warm to the touch, and in more severe cases, the skin may become raised, blistered, or broken.

Several factors can contribute, including infrequent nappy changes, sensitive skin, certain baby wipes, soaps, or detergents, or even a recent course of antibiotics (which can alter natural skin bacteria and lead to thrush-related rashes). While most cases are mild, untreated nappy rash can make babies irritable, disrupt sleep, and occasionally lead to secondary infections caused by bacteria or fungi.

How can we help?

Our pharmacists can provide support and reassurance through the Common Ailments Service, assessing whether the rash is mild irritation or linked to infection. We may supply barrier creams, soothing ointments, or antifungal treatments if thrush is suspected. We’ll also explain how to apply these products correctly to protect and heal your baby’s skin.

Alongside treatment, we’ll give practical advice such as changing nappies more frequently, giving nappy-free time to allow the skin to breathe, cleaning the area gently with water or fragrance-free wipes, and avoiding overly tight nappies. Many treatments may be available free of charge under the scheme, allowing you to access quick, professional help without needing a GP appointment.
