Diarrhoea treatment in Wales

Diarrhoea

What is Diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea is when you pass loose, watery stools more often than usual. It is usually short-term and caused by infections, food poisoning, stress, or medication side effects. Symptoms may include stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, fever, and dehydration if fluid loss is significant.

While most cases clear up within a few days, diarrhoea can be unpleasant, tiring, and sometimes serious if it persists, particularly for children, older adults, or those with other health conditions.

How can we help?

Our pharmacists can support you through the Common Ailments Service by assessing your symptoms and providing treatments such as oral rehydration salts to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. We can also recommend dietary adjustments and self-care tips to help recovery.

Many of these treatments may be supplied free of charge. We’ll also advise on how to prevent the spread of infectious diarrhoea and when to seek urgent care, such as if your symptoms are severe, ongoing, or accompanied by blood in the stool.
