Constipation treatment in Wales

Constipation

What is Constipation?

Constipation occurs when you have infrequent, hard, or difficult-to-pass stools. It can cause bloating, abdominal discomfort, and straining when using the toilet. Common causes include a low-fibre diet, dehydration, lack of exercise, certain medications, or ignoring the urge to go.

While often temporary, constipation can affect comfort and quality of life. Persistent constipation may lead to complications such as haemorrhoids or anal fissures, making early management important.

How can we help?

Our pharmacists can help relieve constipation through the Common Ailments Service. We may supply laxatives or stool-softening treatments and explain how to use them safely. We’ll also provide advice on diet and lifestyle, including increasing fibre intake, staying hydrated, and building physical activity into your routine.

If your constipation is frequent, persistent, or associated with other concerning symptoms, we’ll guide you on when to seek further medical assessment. Many treatments may be supplied free of charge under the scheme, giving you accessible and confidential support.
